The 2021 Ford Explorer embodies the sixth generation of this iconic SUV. Excellent horsepower and capacity, lots of gear, and better value are all great reasons to own an Explorer. Each model is also equipped with standard all-wheel drive with advancements that help it navigate varying road conditions.
There are several competitors in the segment, including the 2021 Toyota Highlander.
Here we compare the two to see who comes out on top.
The 2021 Ford Explorer is packed with power options
The 2021 Explorer model continues Ford's tradition of power. The XLT model is powered by a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. It’s the least powerful of the Explorer lineup, but it has more power and torque than the Highlander's more powerful engine.
Next is a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder that produces an incredible 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, found in the ST model. The Platinum also gets a 3.0-liter six-cylinder that delivers 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. The Limited offers two hybrid engines, either a naturally aspirated 3.3-liter six-cylinder or a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder.
The 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque from the Highlander's 3.5-liter six-cylinder is not enough to compete. The Highlander's hybrid engine doesn't get any better.
The Explorer has better horsepower, but it also has the best drivetrain. Each model is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which outperforms the Highlander's eight-speed automatic.
The 2021 Ford Explorer proves its versatility
The Explorer offers up to 2,486 liters of cargo space behind the front seats, which is more than the Highlander.
The Explorer also provides space for all occupants. With more leg and shoulder room in the first row, more head and shoulder room in the second row, and a more spacious third row for the legs and head, the Explorer makes traveling in more pleasant family.
