Ford Bronco Sport becomes first vehicle to use components made from ocean plastic

The Ford Bronco Sport has become the first vehicle to use components made from ocean plastic recycled from the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. In doing so, Ford has become the first automaker to address ocean pollution and promises to develop more ocean plastic parts in the near future.

In addition to being more affordable to produce, which reduces the cost of vehicle production and the cost to consumers, these ocean-based parts are as durable as petroleum-based parts. They also create sustainable jobs.

More than 13 million tons of ocean plastic ends up in the world's oceans every year. Ford will begin using recycled plastic for the Ford Bronco Sport's wiring harnesses clips, but plans to make more parts eventually.

"This is another example of Ford leading the charge on sustainability," said Jim Buczkowski, vice president of research and Henry Ford technical fellow. "This is a good example of the circular economy, and while these clips are small, they are an important first step in our explorations to use recycled ocean plastics for additional parts in the future."
