What are the differences between the Ford Maverick and the Ford Ranger?

What are the differences between the Ford Maverick and the Ford Ranger?

Recently, Ford now offers three types of pickup trucks. The newcomer is the Maverick, a model that shows up under the Ranger proposition in the lineup. It's understandable that this could be confusing, but in reality, they are two very different vehicles.

To help you figure it out, here's what differentiates the 2022 Ford Maverick from the 2022 Ford Ranger.

The structure

First of all, it's important to know that the two models are conceptually very different. The Ranger is a full-fledged pickup truck, meaning it's mounted on a ladder frame.

The Maverick, on the other hand, is built on a unibody structure, more precisely that of the Escape SUV. However, the seating positions of the two models mean that their capabilities are different.

Capabilities.

Let's talk about capabilities. The Ford Ranger can tow up to 7,500 pounds because of its larger frame, larger size and more powerful engine. Conversely, because it is smaller and has a structure designed primarily for comfort, the Maverick's capacities are more limited. At best, it's 4,000 pounds when equipped with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine (250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque).

With the hybrid model, we're talking about the possibility of hitching 2000 pounds to the rear.

The mechanicals

That brings us to the mechanicals. The Ranger is equipped with a powerful 2.3-litre EcoBoost 4-cylinder engine, which offers 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Its mission is to provide enough power to get the job done. And it does that wonderfully.

In the case of the Maverick, the 2.0-liter engine serves those who need capacity, but not more than they need. So they get a truck that offers all the practicality without the disadvantages of its size, including better fuel economy.

And speaking of fuel economy, the hybrid variant of the Maverick is here to play the role that no one else in the industry can; that of a compact, fuel-efficient pickup truck. It's easy to get away with averaging around 5.0 to 6.0 L/100 km with this vehicle.

Exceptional, really.

The ride

Finally, another difference related to the vehicle's structure makes the two models behave very differently. With the Ranger, you can feel all the sturdiness at your disposal, but on certain roads, you get shaken up a bit more. It's nice, but it's only to be expected. With the Maverick pickup, it's the opposite; comfort is king. It's overwhelming, even.

Where the models are similar is that they both give you excellent value for money, and they both work very well when called upon. The models each offer a host of options that allow you to customize the model, add convenience features to the case, and more.
